5 Reasons You Need to Drink Lemon Water Everyday

Have you hear about the health craze of drinking lemon water? We’re sharing what we found when we started researching it!

Are you ready to trade in your morning coffee for a glass of lemon water?

You might be when you hear all the reasons why you should be drinking a glass of lemon water everyday.

I might drink a tall glass of cold lemonade in the summer but it’s usually delicious mixed with all that sugar.  To get the benefits of drinking lemon water you’ll want to stick to just water with lemon juice, no sugar added.

That’ll certainly change the taste of it!

It’s even better to drink warm lemon water.

You can think of this as a sort of tea.  It’s a great change up from coffee, or if you’re like me, you might just drink it before your coffee to help get the health benefits.

Drinking warm lemon water is one of the biggest health food trends right now, and we’ve done some research to find out what’s true and what’s not when it comes to drinking warm lemon water.

It turns out that it’s pretty beneficial and you should definitely do it everyday. A few of the health claims can’t be backed up by science, so you may have to try it for yourself to see how great it is.

Lemon Water Benefits

Weight Loss

Warm lemon water helps with weight loss, but you may be surprised to hear why it actually works.

To start with, drinking lemon water in the morning is a great replacement for other drinks such as coffee or tea with cream. Or even a glass of orange juice.

Basically you’re cutting lots of calories (and sugar) out of your diet.

In my case it’s probably just delaying them until later instead of cutting them.

Drinking water before you eat helps your stomach to feel full, and in turn you’ll eat less.

Many times you may feel hungry when you are dehydrated and drinking water will help to alleviate this feeling. (Even water that doesn’t have lemon in it!)

It’s also been shown that drinking warm water helps to raise the body’s temperature, which can increase your metabolic rate.  This is just one of the great reasons to stay hydrated!

Let’s not forget that your body is far over half water.  All those cells need plenty of water to function correctly.

Drinking warm lemon water is not likely to be the silver bullet to weight loss, but it’s a great healthy step that’s easy to implement.

Especially if you find water to be just a little bit boring.

Get Your Daily Dose of Vitamin C

Warm lemon water gives you a great does of Vitamin C and that’s something we all need.

Vitamin C has been proven to help boost the immune system and fight off colds and flu.  It can also help you recover faster when you actually get a cold or the flu.

Vitamin C also helps us with iron absorption.

A few of the other great nutrients that a lemon provides include fiber, calcium, magnesium, potassium and folate.

Water is Good for Your Skin

Of course drinking plenty of water is great for your skin.

Dehydration can cause the look of premature aging.  Nobody needs to have any help with that, no matter what your age is.

Drinking warm lemon water, and getting those vitamins and minerals, can help fight photo damage, which are the dark spots and wrinkles you’ll see on your skin.

Vitamin C helps also helps to produce collagen, which keeps your skin looking young and smooth.

It also stands to reason that if you’re drinking plenty of water it’s going to give you a healthy glow!

Aids Digestion

Drinking water is exactly what your digestive system needs.  The biggest benefit of this isn’t likely to be whether the water is warm or cold or contains lemons, just that it gets your digestive system moving.

Drinking warm lemon water first thing in the morning helps rehydrate you after sleep.

You are basically fasting when you’re sleeping, if you consider that you’ve gone 8 hours or more without consuming any food or water.  Starting off with a nice glass of water helps your body get hydrated and ready for the day.

There is some scientific evidence that the acid in lemon juice can help stimulate saliva production, stomach acid and bile production.

These are all great benefits for digestion.

Other Health Benefits

Drinking warm lemon water each day can provide other health benefits.  Some of these are proven and some are just speculative but we’re sharing them and you can decide what works for you.

Drinking warm lemon water may be beneficial in helping to prevent some types of kidney stones, treating gout, and preventing constipation.

Hydration is important for digestion so drinking plenty of water can help keep you regular.

The warmth of the water can also help to clear out your sinuses, which is particularly helpful when you’re suffering from a cold.

What Lemon Water Can’t Do

Drinking water has many of the same benefits of drinking warm lemon water.  The lemons add some vitamins and some flavor, but at the end of the day just drinking plenty of water is the key to better health.

Lemon water does not flush toxins.  Or at least it doesn’t flush them any better than drinking plain water can.  The claim is that lemon water causes perspiration, which flushes out toxins.  Sweat does flush out toxins, and this is good for your body, just be sure that you rehydrate.

Lemon water doesn’t change your PH levels.  There have been claims that the acidity can change the PH of your body but this is not true.  For more information on that you can read this article that talks about why you can’t change your blood’s PH.

Lemon Water does not prevent or cure cancer.  There are many ongoing studies about how flavonoids may help fight cancer, but as of right now these are not proven methods, and claiming this is irresponsible.

Lemon Water Can Damage Tooth Enamel

The downside of lemon water is that it can damage tooth enamel.

The high acid content in citrus can eat away at the protective layer of enamel on your teeth.  So it’s not just the lemons that you have to watch out for!

You can help prevent this by drinking it through a straw, or drinking plain water immediately afterward to help flush the acid out of your mouth.

The temperature of the water can determine it’s effect on your teeth too, hotter water is going to make enamel erosion happen quicker than cooler water. Enamel erosion can cause your teeth to appear more yellow and be sensitive.

There always has to be a downside right?

How I Drink Lemon Water

Since I started drinking a glass of lemon water each morning I’ve noticed that I feel alert much quicker.

This is surprising to everyone since my love for coffee is well known.  It started off as an experiment and now it’s part of my daily routine. It’s always better in a fancy cup and I’m in love with these vintage sets which would also make a lovely gift!

Warm lemon water is a great alternative to juice or other sugary drinks.

I personally love the tang and tart flavor of the lemon, and it helps me to keep up my water consumption each day. I’m definitely one of those people that finds water a boring drink so dressing it up with a lemon makes it more fun.

I don’t drink it warm everyday (except when it’s cold outside) but here’s how I love to drink mine!
