The Benefits of Grapefruit Sugar Scrub

Grapefruit is a good treatment for oily skin.  This sugar scrub will help exfoliate your skin and the grapefruit will help detoxify it.

Sugar is a lightweight exfoliator so it’s great to use on sensitive or oily skin. It won’t over exfoliate – unless you scrub really hard or use it way too often.

Don’t do that.

Grapefruit essential oil is light and citrusy so you’ll have a lovely clean smell to your scrub.  The scent is known to increase energy, reduce stress and enhance your mood.

Now we all know that we can use anything to help destress but this scent will get you energized in the morning.

This is by far our favorite scent to use in our morning shower!

How to Make Grapefruit Sugar Scrub – The Recipe

You just need 3 ingredients to make this sugar scrub:

  • 1 Cup of Sugar
  • 1/2 Cup of Coconut Oil
  • 10-15 drops of Grapefruit Essential Oil

Optional – you can add some grapefruit zest if you have it on hand.  The zest adds a pretty color to your mix and a little more texture.

You can even use fresh grapefruit if you’d like, but the scent may not be as strong as the essential oils.

Also note that if you use fresh grapefruit or zest your grapefruit sugar scrub may not stay fresh as long.

If it has a scent that doesn’t smell like fresh grapefruit be sure to pitch it and mix up a new batch!

Also note that with any fresh ingredient the shelf like is going to be shorter.

We use organic granulated sugar for our scrubs and organic coconut oil.  Even going for the better ingredients makes it less expensive than purchasing a scrub at the makeup counter.

Saving money at the makeup counter is a great reason, but so is using fresh ingredients and knowing what you’re putting on your skin.

To Make the Scrub

We like to start off using about half of the coconut oil and mixing it with the sugar and essential oil.  Add enough essential oil to get the scent as strong as you’d like and mix in enough coconut oil to get the consistency that you like.

We personally like our scrubs to be a little more solid than oily so we’re going to go easy on adding coconut oil.

If the coconut oil is stored in a cooler place it may also solidify so be sure that you give it a good mix.

Then just put it in a pretty jar and store it next to your shower or bath.

That’s all there is to it!

How to Use Your Sugar Scrub

Well this is the easy part!

Just scoop up a handful and rub it all over your body.

You’ll love the way your skin feels with a nice exfoliation.  Sugar is gentle enough for all skin types and provides just a light exfoliation so it’s okay to use it everyday if you’d like.

If your grapefruit sugar scrub gets too solid just let it sit near the warmth for a few minutes and it should loosen up.

Of course if you’re ever unhappy with the consistency you can experiment by adding more or less products. We like this recipe but it’s entirely up to you to adjust it to your liking and environment!

Of course, we always recommend you do a patch test if you have sensitive skin and make sure that it doesn’t irritate. Everyone’s skin is different and you know yours best.
